The Hudins have experience in a wide-range of subjects. In time, this section will be developed to have as much as possible in text for all to see.
What is Raku?
Raku, so much fire and smoke
All of our pieces are Raku fired in our studio, 20 feet from our back door. This process is unique to pottery. It is an ancient firing technique from Japan and was used primarily for tea ceremony ware. About 50 years ago potters brought Raku to America and in the ensuing years it has changed dramatically.
Raku differs from other pottery because the pieces are pulled from the hot (1800°F) kiln when the glazes melt and then they are chilled rapidly. Fine crackle patterns develop in the glaze. These are enhanced when the pieces are placed in cans with burnable material and the lines become smoked. Any area left unglazed is 'carbonized' and takes on a smoky gray-black look. Often the glazes have a spectacular metallic luster, which is very unpredictable. Imperfections from tong marks, straw ash, flame play, warping, and post-firing surprises are a surety of authenticity.
Each masterfully created art piece incorporates 30 years of artistic experience and is crafted with care and attention to detail. Many hundreds of people have collected our work across the country and we look forward to you joining them.
